Raf Simons SS03 Consumed "commodity" sweater
In the SS03 collection "Consumed", Raf portrayed an ominous, dystopian vision of the consequences of consumerism. Despite the dark undertones, "Consumed” is not a mere complaint or protest against capitalism, but rather Raf’s take on the culture that flourishes as a consequence. In his own words, Raf explained that he is not “trying to criticize or define the consumption environment of modern society… [but rather] looking closely at why everyone is attracted by the logo and brand name”. He sees the youth taking advantage of the “push” to consume and the vast amount of available options and products in order to build their own identity and to express themselves.
To portray this vision, many garments were printed with logos and words that cue aspects of consumer culture. In this particular sweater, Raf printed the word "commodity" over and over in the back, alluding to the compulsive consumerist mentality. Additionally, the title of the collection is featured in the front, in a pocket-sized print. This sweater also features the classic raglan cut with a slim fit in the arms.
