Yohji Yamamoto Ballerina Shoes (SS97)

Preceding Balenciaga’s iteration by decades, these early Yohji’s ballerina flats are a beautiful example of his artistic expression. Throughout his career, Yohji has thoroughly explored gender nonconformity and cross-dressing, most notably in the form of androgynous cuts and oversized garments for women. However, this exploration also extended to his menswear collections, such as this ballet shoe.

Featuring a simple design, with a canvas outer and a flat sole, this shoe aims to shine some sensibility into menswear and to cross boundaries that most men were not comfortable to cross.

Despite this shoe being 25 years old, it still poses some interesting questions today.
